Paddington Terrace Renovation

One of the home’s more unusual existing conditions was the location of the staircase on the opposite side of the house to the front door. Rather than treating this as a limitation, we used it as an opportunity. A new light well and internal window were introduced where the hallway would traditionally sit, drawing natural light deep into the centre of the house and creating unexpected views through the interior. In such a small home, that extra sense of depth makes a significant difference.

We incorporated a powder room and laundry beneath the stair and kitchen, making use of areas that might otherwise have been lost. Skylights bring further daylight into the kitchen and living spaces, while large steel-framed doors connect the rear of the house to the courtyard and extend the feeling of space beyond the building itself.

Warm timber, natural stone, soft neutral finishes and brass detailing give the interiors a relaxed contemporary character, while original architectural elements have been retained where they add to the story of the terrace.

The result is a small home that feels considerably more generous than its footprint — bright, connected and carefully resolved, with every metre working harder.
